A Psychologist's Perspective on Verbal Violence in Our Youth
In today's digital age, where social media and online gaming platforms have become ubiquitous, a disturbing trend has emerged: the rise of verbal violence among young people. Children and adolescents are increasingly using slang, Gen Alpha terms, and even swear words to "roast" or tease their peers, often blurring the lines between teasing and bullying. This toxic language can have profound consequences for their mental health and well-being, as well as for the overall social climate.
As a psychologist, I have observed firsthand the detrimental effects of this verbal violence on young people. When children and adolescents are constantly exposed to offensive language and hurtful insults, it can erode their self-esteem, increase their anxiety and depression, and even lead to suicidal thoughts. Moreover, the constant pressure to one-up each other with increasingly aggressive language can create a toxic environment that is filled with stress and anxiety.
Consider the case of A.G., a 14-year-old boy who was brought to therapy by his parents due to his declining grades and withdrawn behavior. During our sessions, Alex revealed that he was being bullied online and at school, with classmates making fun of his appearance and academic struggles. The constant barrage of insults had taken a toll on his self-esteem, leading to feelings of hopelessness and despair.
Another example is S.K., a 12-year-old girl who was struggling with anxiety and low self-esteem. She reported that she was often the target of hurtful comments and jokes from her peers. The constant bullying had made her feel isolated and alone, leading to feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness.
The "roast" culture, which often involves using humor to humiliate or belittle others, has become a disturbingly normalized part of many young people's lives. This trend can be attributed to a variety of factors, including the influence of popular culture, the desensitizing effects of online content, and a lack of understanding about the potential harm of such language. However, it is also important to consider the role of society in perpetuating this toxic culture.
The rise of "cancel culture," where individuals are publicly shamed and ostracized for their words or actions, has created a climate of fear and intolerance. In an attempt to avoid being canceled, young people may feel pressured to conform to harmful social norms and engage in aggressive behavior. This can lead to a vicious cycle, where individuals feel compelled to use offensive language in order to avoid being targeted themselves.
The normalization of the "roast" or troll culture is another contributing factor to the prevalence of verbal violence among young people. When this type of behavior is seen as acceptable or even funny, it sends a message that it is okay to be disrespectful and hurtful. This can have a profound impact on the way young people interact with each other and view the world.
At the heart of this issue is a fundamental lack of respect. When young people are constantly exposed to offensive language and hurtful insults, they may begin to believe that such behavior is acceptable. This can lead to a breakdown in social cohesion and a loss of empathy.
It is imperative that we address this issue before it gets any worse. Parents, educators, and mental health professionals need to work together to raise awareness about the harmful effects of verbal violence and to provide young people with the tools and resources they need to develop healthy coping mechanisms. We must also create a more positive and inclusive social environment where everyone feels valued and respected.
By fostering empathy, kindness, and respect, we can help to create a generation of young people who are capable of building strong, healthy relationships and contributing positively to society.

Creating a More Compassionate and Respectful World
The normalization of the "roast" culture is slowly eroding the fabric of our society. The youngsters don't even recognize it as disrespectful anymore. The "everything is okay" or "so what" attitude is spreading like bad rash all over our society replacing the beautiful values of respect and compassion. Respect, humility, kindness and compassion are the pillars of civilization. I wonder where our "civilization" (which is not civilized anymore!) is headed to? Self-destruction?
To create a more compassionate and respectful world for future generations, we must take concerted action on multiple fronts. and ACT NOW!
1. Educate and Empower
Schools and Educational Institutions: Incorporate social-emotional learning (SEL) into curricula to teach children and adolescents about empathy, kindness, and respectful communication.
Parental Guidance: Encourage parents to model respectful behavior and teach their children the importance of using kind and considerate language.
Online Platforms: Promote online safety and digital citizenship, emphasizing the importance of respectful online interactions.
2. Foster Empathy and Understanding
Community Initiatives: Organize community events and workshops that promote empathy and understanding.
Media and Entertainment: Encourage media outlets to portray positive and respectful role models.
Social Media Campaigns: Launch social media campaigns that promote kindness, empathy, and respectful communication.
3. Address Underlying Issues
Mental Health Support: Ensure access to mental health services for individuals struggling with the effects of verbal violence.
Economic Inequality: Address economic disparities that can contribute to social tensions and aggression.
Cultural Diversity: Promote cultural understanding and respect to reduce prejudice and discrimination.
4. Promote Positive Role Models
Celebrities and Influencers: Encourage public figures to use their platforms to promote positive values and respectful behavior.
Community Leaders: Recognize and celebrate individuals who exemplify kindness, empathy, and respect.
5. Create Safe Spaces
Schools and Workplaces: Establish policies and procedures to prevent and address bullying and harassment.
Online Platforms: Implement stronger measures to combat cyberbullying and hate speech.
Community Centers: Provide safe spaces for young people to socialize and engage in positive activities.
By taking these steps, we can create a more compassionate and respectful world for future generations. It is essential to remember that change starts with each of us. By making a conscious effort to use kind and considerate language and by promoting empathy and understanding, we can contribute to a more positive and harmonious society.
As they say, “It takes a village to raise the child.”
